We went to town today to pick up a few things for some projects. I grabbed some plywood to make some nuc boxes. I will probably put those together tomorrow. We happened into Fred’s and Tractor Supply, partially in search of some berry plants to put in.
I am pretty sure I lost at least two of my blueberry bushes in the drought last summer, so I wanted to grab a couple. I am ok with young plants, as I have some that are older as well. I ended up finding them at Fred’s (a local discount store) for $5 a piece. I grabbed four of them.
We then went on to TSC. They have a HUGE assortment of berry plants right now. We ended up with Raspberry, Golden Raspberry, Thornless Blackberry, Goji Berry, and something called a Loganberry. Apparently that one is a cross between raspberry and blackberry.
One other thing we found was a hardy kiwi. I was surprised to see that it would grow just fine in my area, so at $8 I grabbed one of those as well. Most of the plants at TSC were just $5, I thought them to be a bargain.
We came home and got them all planted. I look it these as beneficial in more than one way. When they flower, they will feed the bees… and in turn, they will feed the family. Most of the raspberries are the type that will flower and fruit from spring until frost, everbearing… so I look forward to those.
Tomorrow, onto the nuc boxes and perhaps working through the beehives to see how we are looking. I intend to make some splits this spring.
