I thought I had posted this before, but apparently not. I was watching Blake Kirby’s YouTube channel LINK HERE He has a video about feeding his bees. It’s that time of year, and I was happy to watch him feeding his bees. I noticed he had the same feeder I have, and that got me to thinking about the modification I made.
I saw this somewhere else, but it has been some time, and I don’t recall where. When the hives are full of bees and you are feeding, there will be bees all down the net ‘ladders’ inside of the feeder. Pouring the syrup into the holes would quite possibly drown bees. What I did was drill an extra hole that I could put a stopper in to fill my feeder.
This is how my feeders arrived. Basically some boards, some plastic ladders, some rubber bands, and the frame feeder body.
I drilled the top boards with a third hole. I do believe it was a 1″ paddle bit I used.
I picked up some rubber stoppers, just to keep the bees from getting down into the feeder and drowning.
I added a thumb tack to hold the plastic net in place.
I finished assembling the frame, and they have been installed for quite some time.
Overall, I have been very pleased with the feeders. The extra hole really does make filling them a snap.
